Are Your Current Number Plates Legal?

are my number plates illegal?

In this post, we’ll go over the things you need to look out for when checking your number plates to make sure they are legal to use on UK roads. This includes the lettering, the fonts, the numbers, images and more. Let’s take a look.

What To Look Out For When Checking Your Number Plates?

The things you need to look out for when checking your number plates vary from not having the correct number plate design to the font being illegal. We’ve made it as simple as we possibly can to show and instruct you on how to ensure your number plates are road-ready!

One of the easiest ways to ensure your number plate is legal is by using our number plate builder to create and order your new plates.

Our number plate builder is designed to allow the user to build only legal number plates. This way, you won’t have to worry about spending your hard-earned money on something illegal that could lead to potential fines in the future and of course the added expense of having to re-order new number plates when you’re busted!

Here a few things you can do today to check to see if your number plates are legal and roadworthy. Are your number plates legal? Let’s find out.

Check The Digits

Cars and motorcycles have two digits that are slightly different. Both are based on the New Charles Wright font and must be written at a high density of blackness so that both the human eye and the ANPR cameras can clearly read them.

Check The Spacing

It is an offence to change, rearrange or modify numbers and letters on a number plate in order to make names or words, or in a way that makes it difficult to read the registration number. The Registration must match the reading of the V5C entitlement text, also known as the logbook.

Legal spacing and right fonts improve the ANPR readability of the camera. Digits are usually rearranged to look more like a name, but doing so is illegal.

Check The Flags

GB number plates

Motorists can, if they wish, display the Euro symbol and the GB national identifier on the number plate. Any regional flags can be displayed on the left side of the number plate, along with its name or letter of identification.

The letters that you can choose from are:

  • GB or Great Britain
  • UK or United Kingdom
  • ENGLAND, England, ENG or Eng
  • CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
  • SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
  • WALES or Wales

You are not allowed to display any other flag or emblem, and these criteria apply only to vehicles registered in England, Scotland and Wales. The only emblem that can be shown for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland is the European logo.

When travelling within Europe, a GB identifier would need to be shown.

Check Your Number Plate Suppliers Details

Finally, and most importantly, your number plate has to indicate where it was made. This should be the name and postal code of the supply outlet, the business details of where the plate was made. This should be seen in the bottom centre of the plate. The number plate should also indicate who originally made the parts (JEPSON) and that they are British Standard compliant (both displayed at the bottom right of the plate).

If your number plates do not follow such criteria, this means that your number plates are illegal and you could fail your MOT test.

What Happens If You Are Caught With Illegal Number Plates?

what will happen if i install illegal number plates in the uk?

It’s a well-known fact that police in the UK operate using automatic number plate recognition, also known as ANPR. These ANPR cameras can detect plates that do not meet the national criteria.

If caught displaying an illegal plate, motorists will face up to £1000 for using misrepresented number plates on their vehicles.

How To Prevent Buying Illegal Number Plates?

One of the easiest ways to prevent the purchase of illegal plates is to use an online registration plate maker like ours.

Companies that don’t ask for these details may supply you with illegal number plates that could see you facing a £1k fine, without your knowledge.

If you are concerned about who you should have your number plate printed with, choose us. We are registered with DVLA and have an online number plate maker to ensure you always get a great looking and very legal number plate. Take a look at our number plate maker now.
